2019 Election: INEC Office Burnt In Akwa Ibom

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ibesikpo Asuntan local government area of Akwa Ibom state has been gutted by fire.

This happened on the eve of the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections.

A security guard who was on duty at the INEC office told a news outlet that the fire started around 2 a.m. on Friday.

“We heard an explosion inside the building, when we rushed to check what it was, we saw flames of fire coming from one of the rooms,” the guard said.

“We raised alarm for help, and then we started fighting the fire, using water and sand. But it was too much for us.”

Some electoral materials meant to be use for tomorrow's election were destroyed in the incident.

A witness said that the police were able to secure some electoral materials.

Mike Igini, resident electoral commissioner of the state, has visited the scene. It is unclear if the incident would affect Saturday’s election in the area.
