Google Set Out To Empower 50,000 Women In Nigeria And Other African Countries
Google held an empowerment event themed ‘Balance for better’ in Lagos on Friday, as part of celebrating International Women’s Day. Google announced its plan to initiate 18 new Womenwill chapters across sub-Saharan Africa to drive conversations that promote gender equality for the benefit of everyone.
Mojolaoluwa Akinremi-Makinde, Google Africa’s Brand and Reputation lead, talked about the purpose of Womenwill as a Google initiative to create economic opportunity for women everywhere so that they could realize their abilities and potentials.
She also stated that the programme will help women to make the most of technology to build skills, get inspired, and connect with each other through training, events and advocacy.
“The gender gap can be solved if women have the same access to resources and skill acquisition sources as men. This is why we’re expanding the Womenwill chapters in SSA and continuing our focus on diversity and gender equality into 2019 and beyond,” Akinremi-Makinde said.
Akinremi also said that the new chapters were located across sub-Saharan Africa in cities including Accra, Cape Town, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, Lekki and Onitsha, bringing the total number of chapters in Africa to 25, with more to launch in the coming weeks.
According to her, the chapters are being launched simultaneously at events in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; and Lagos, Nigeria following a week in which digital skills masterclasses held at various locations in these countries, involving some 5,000 women.
The Country Director, Google Nigeria, Juliet Ehimuan-Chaizor, said research had shown that a lot of women were employed in lower paid jobs in the informal sector, adding that a 2018 gender gap report indicated that it would take up to 165 years to close the gender gap.
According to her, the statistics are unacceptable because of the impact the gender inequality can have on society.
Ehimuan-Chaizor added that the Womenwill programme would empower African women with the right skills for them to grow appropriately.

How I originated “O To Ge’’ campaign slogan that overthrow Saraki – Alhaji Jimoh LAK
79 year old Alhaji LAK Jimoh, who is the originator of the three word campaign slogan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State “O to Ge” which means "Enough is Enough" in English has been described by election observers as an eloquent and effectively used to end decades of political supremacy of a dynasty in Kwara.
Alhaji LAK whose LAK acronyms stand for Lazeez Ayinla Kolawole a renowned politician in Kwara, in ilorin said “Every revolution like a seed, it grows to become an oak tree,’’ he also talked about how he came about the wild fire Campaign slogan for the All Progressive Congress(APC) in Kwara State.
The election observers saw the APC’s victory in the the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state as an upset and a final blow for the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara politics.
The PDP was massively defeated in the presidential election and the entire three Senatorial and six House of Representatives seats to the APC.
The defeat of the senate president in his stronghold, Kwara Central Senatorial zone by the APC candidate, Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe. Oloriegbe polled a total of 123,808 votes to defeat the Senate President who scored 68,994 votes in the four Local Governments Areas of Kwara Central Senatorial District was the main loss.
Alhaji LAK said the "O to Ge’’ movement actually started when he was an aspirant for the Kwara Central Senatorial seat under the PDP in 2010 preparatory to the 2011 general elections.
And that he had also used a similar slogan in 2003, “It Is Time For Change’’ when he lost the Kwara Governorship Primaries of the PDP to Bukola Saraki.
“This movement did not just start in 2018. Every revolution starts like a seed and with time it grows to become an oak tree.
“When I foresaw the revolution that will end the era of bad governance in Kwara, majority of the people did not see it.
“People did not see it then and I was accused of being too revolutionary but I assured them that we will ultimately get there. “Gradually, the revolution assumed the spine and magnitude that we just saw in this year’s election, when the people used the power of vote to dethrone decades of political dynasty that had impoverished Kwara,’’ he said.
He explained: “Kwara is not an industrial state, it is an agrarian state but today we do not have even a Ministry of Agriculture. We do not have any thriving agricultural project at all.
"All the agric nurseries and training schools and even the land of the Ministry of Agriculture were sold out.’’
He said the media hyped multi-billion Naira Shonga Farm project by Bukola Saraki as governor of Kwara was a sham. “Billons of Naira were pumped into the project but till today no single farm product came out of the farm till it got Moribund.
"It is all fraud. What they called Zimbabwe farmers were just farm workers who did not bring a dime to the state for investment yet they called them investors. “It was the state government that borrowed billions of Naira from the defunct Intercontinental Bank and gave it to these people but we have nothing to show for it,’’ he said.
Jimoh also emphasis that Kwara inherited some employment creating establishments like the Jebba Paper Mill, Tate and Lyle Sugar manufacturing company in Bacita and the British Morris Tobacco Company, which had all collapsed because of hostile economic atmosphere.
He alleged that the state owned Trade Bank, was liquidated simply because the management was not cooperating with political authority to use the Bank for looting of resources. Jimoh said under the watchful eyes of the past administrations also, state owned Gateway Insurance Company, Kwara Express and Kwara Hotels folded up. He said the state had witnessed a total decay of infrastructure, ranging from bad roads, poor health delivery system, collapse of environmental sanitation and educational system.
"When I saw all these, I said we must not continue in that way and allow these people to destroy the state. “Then, I said, “O to Ge, Enough is Enough. We must rise against the misrule and slavery,’’ he said.

The ex-governor, who sacrificed his second term prospect under the Action Democratic Party to support Adelabu, had addressed a tumultuous crowd of party supporters at a mega rally held at the façade of Soun Ogunlola Hall, Ogbomoso, on Wednesday.
Also on the campaign trail were prominent leaders of Ogbomoso, including a former local government chairman, Chief Dayo Lawal and a Fourth Republic Senator, Gen Brimmo Yusuf (retd).
He had earlier visited the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, in company with Adelabu and his running mate, Hon Samuel Egunjobi, where he said that his alliance with the APC was in the best interest of the city.
After perusing the blueprint of the two governorship candidates jostling for his endorsement, Alao-Akala said that he settled for the APC candidate based on what he called his superior credentials, track record, pedigree and ability to deliver on electioneering promises.
Urging the people of Ogbomoso to cast their vote for Adelabu of the APC, the ex-governor assured them that they would not regret their alliance with the party if its candidate emerged victorious in Saturday’s election.
He said that the enormity of the task ahead had made it imperative for a coalition of interests and the coming together of political parties desirous of making appreciable impact at the governorship election.
Alao-Akala said, “You know we are not new in this game of politics. I have carefully assessed the credentials of the people seeking my support and I have no equivocation in settling for Bayo Adelabu of the APC. My alliance with the APC for the governorship election is in our best interest in Ogbomoso. I have never misled you and I will not mislead you on this. The alliance will be of tremendous benefit to us. I have told the APC leadership, up to the national level, what Ogbomoso wants.
“I told them that Ladoke Akintola University of Technology is our own heritage here. That the hospital needs attention and we want them to bring it up to the admirable standard we dreamt fpr it. Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road has suffered inexplicable neglect over the years and I have also secured assurances that it will receive the needed attention if the APC candidate wins. Therefore, I urge you to vote for Bayo Adelabu of the APC as governor on Saturday. We stand to gain a lot from an APC government at the state and national level. I’m not in this for myself, but in the interest of Ogbomoso”.
Responding, Adelabu expressed gratitude to Alao-Akala for deeming him worthy of alliance ahead of the governorship election.
Describing the ex-governor in glowing attributes, he said his closeness with him had revealed him to be a committed and principled elder statesman, who was not driven by self-aggrandizement but the larger interest of the state.
Noting that the Ilorin-Ogbomoso road was the gateway to the North, he promised to collaborate with the Federal Government to ensure its completion if he was elected as the governor of the state.

Lady Narrates How Her Boyfriend Used Her Undies For Money Ritual
Rachael Godwin, is a 32-year-old physiotherapist who works at National Orthopedic Hospital, Yaba, alleged that her boyfriend, one Olumide who claimed to be a fraudster plotted with his partner-in-crime and forced her to wear the pants which he used for money ritual.
The lady who narrated her experience to newsmen at the police command headquarters, Ikeja, yesterday said she met and fell in love with the suspect in January 2018. According to her: “I met Olumide in a BRT bus going from Ikorodu to Ikeja. On the day, he directed me on how to get to the police headquarters during which we exchanged contact. We kept in touch for a while and he later told me he had Gonorrhea disease, which I treated him.
“We became close and then lovers. I guess he must have hypnotized me such that I really don’t know what I was doing then. I gave him my entire savings. He even lodged in a hotel for four months and I paid a bill of N185,000 at Ketu Kosofe.
“He later took me to his father at Ikosi. They live in a very unhealthy environment, which I pitied them and offered to help. I rented a house for myself in November 2018 and he visited me in the house that same month. On December 12, when he visited me, he said he wanted to buy a Venza, I asked him how much and when he googled it, he said it was N11.8 million. I asked him how would he raise the money and he said we should open a joint account. I took my house document to get a loan and even promised to gather all I had from my cooperative bank account.
“My trouble started on December 14, 2018, when he came to my house and gave me a pant to wear. I told him that I can’t wear the pant because I was not comfortable. He went to call one of my neighbour named Helen who helped him to force me to wear the pants. After which I ran mad and was taken to my mother’s house. They took me to Ibadan for treatment and I became better.
“I did not suspect him then. I kept relating with him. On December 31, I went to a church for Thanksgiving. I was given some prayers to follow up every midnight. He came back to me and was still living with me. While I was praying in January, Olumide started shouting, stop praying that he has received the money and its only $2,000 from USA.”
Confessing, Olumide said that he was shocked to discover that the $2,000 only amounted to N750,000. He alleged that he gave Helen N300,000 and gave another man some money.
Meanwhile the case is being investigated at the Command Headquarters, while the suspect is still in detention.

Ibadan Chiefs Question Tinubu’s Interest In Oyo Gubernatorial Election.
Ibadan Chiefs have questioned the interest of the former governor of Lagos State and the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s interest in the gubernatorial election of Oyo state.
The Chief’s spokesperson, Wale Oladoja in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan, said they don’t want external forces to create division between the two leading governorship candidates in the state.
Otunba Alao Akala, who formed an alliance with the opposition parties, while addressing his supporters in a video, said Ladoja told him that he could not become a governor because he was not an Ibadan indigene but Ogbomoso.
The group also warned a former governor of the state, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala over his recent utterances against the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Rasidi Ladoja.
The chiefs also warned that they won’t allow anyone to abuse Olubadan and the High Chief Rasidi Ladoja for saying the truth to the authority.
The statement reads in part: “We believe that Ogbomoso and Ibadan are from the same mother, therefore, we don’t expect Akala to cause crisis between the two ancient cities.
“What is the interest of Tinubu in Oyo guber politics? It is open secret that he is instigating two brothers against each other and it is not acceptable to us. The candidates of PDP and APC are our sons and we don’t want external forces to create divisions among them.
“Both of them are gentlemen from Ibadan but we realised that Seyi Makinde is more of a grassroots than his younger brother. Therefore we appeal to our people especially the entire Ibadan indigenes, Ibarapa, Saki, iseyin, Oyo and the entire people of the state to consider the closeness of Seyi Makinde to the grassroots before voting. We implore Adelabu to wait till 2023 to actualise his ambition.”.

Nigeria's First Female to pilot Gigantic Boeing Dreamliner emerges
Nigeria's First Female to pilot Gigantic Boeing Dreamliner emerges*
The first female pilot in Africa emerged 1964 but for many years thereafter women did not rise to take on cockpit.
Instead women filled the ranks of flight attendants, leaving the men to dominate the role of pilot. However, with the number of educated and empowered women rising, so do their numbers in male-dominated fields. Here is a Nigerian woman who are breaking barriers in African skies.
Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo is the first Nigerian woman to pilot the gigantic Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Qatar Airways and to fly the Boeing 767 Aircraft across the Atlantic. She joins Kenya’s Captain Irene Koki, Ethiopia’s Captain Amsale Gulau and a few other African women who fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
30-year-old Sowemimo is known as a whizz at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, in United States of America. She became the first black woman to get a doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering.
An indigene of Ogbomosho, Oyo state, Adeola the second child in a family of six.
*About Boeing 787*
1. Originally, the airliner was to be called the 7E7 (the “E” stood for efficiency), but Boeing decided to change the name to the 787 in order to stay with tradition. There were several reasons for the name change to the number sequence that the Boeing planes were famous for. The most obvious was that people are most familiar with the ascending numbers indicating when each Boeing jet was released (707 was the first one and the 777 was the previous before the 787). Another interesting theory (although mostly speculated) is that Boeing incorporated the number ‘8’ because it is considered good luck in China (as it translates to ‘money’). Chinese airlines bought a very large amount of the 787s, therefore seemingly backing up this reasoning.
2. Depending on the model and configuration, the plane sells for approximately $146 to $200 million dollars. According to sources, there have been about 1057 total orders for the 787 Dreamliner (this includes the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 models).
3. The Dreamliner contains approximately 2.3 million parts, which have been supplied from all over the world. The Boeing 737 had only 400 thousand parts.
4. The size of the windows on a 787 Dreamliner are the largest of any airplane to date, measuring at 47 by 28 centimeters (or 19 inches high). According to Boeing, this makes the 787’s windows 65% larger than any other aircraft window.
5. Let’s talk about green facts! The Dreamliner is Boeing’s most eco-friendly airliner for two reasons. First, this is Boeing’s most fuel-efficient airliner, designed to be 20% more efficient than the 767. Second, the 787 is the world’s first major airliner to incorporate primarily composite materials in the construction of its airframe.
6.The cabin is state of the art! Flight attendants and other crew members have the ability to customize the lighting in the cabin – they can simulate a bright daylight or a calm night sky. Even more interesting, the plane has no window shades! Instead, there is a dimming option for passengers. Want to see it in action? Check out a demo of the entire cabin experience here.
Cabin Photo
7. An empty 787 weighs close to 117,617 kilograms. That’s the equivalent of about 29 adult elephants! The wing span measures at 197u feet (or 60 meters), the length is 186 feet (57 meters), and the height is a total of 56 feet (17 meters).
8. It flies at Mach 0.85, which translates to about 650 miles per hour.
9. Ever heard of Smooth Ride Technology? The 787 senses turbulence and automatically adjusts the wing control surfaces for a smoother ride. Many sensors that are located all around the aircraft constantly measure changes in angular velocity and pressure distribution. Controllers then take in the data, apply software algorithms and determine what actions should be taken next.
10. Aversan, an aerospace and defense company, was contracted via Honeywell to help develop embedded software.

According to BBC, the National Army Museum on Monday said it had agreed to a formal request for the return of objects “considered to be of cultural sensitivity to Ethiopian citizens.’’
Terri Dendy, head of collections at the museum, said: “Our decision to repatriate is very much based on the desire to inter the hair within the tomb alongside the emperor.
“Having spent considerable time researching the provenance and cultural sensitivities around this matter, we believe the Ethiopian government claim to repatriate is reasonable and we are pleased to be able to assist.”
The historic Battle of Magdala, which resulted in the fall of Emperor Tewodros, was the conclusion of the British expedition to Abyssinia.
The expedition witnessed the battle between British and Abyssinian forces at Magdala in 1868.
In the mid-19th Century, Emperor Tewodros II had decided to modernise his empire, Abyssinia, by opening up relations with the British, but his letter to Queen Victoria requesting munitions and military experts was ignored.
In protest, the emperor detained the British consul and other missionaries, and Britain reacted by sending an army to the emperor’s fortress in Maqdala.
The Magdala invasion, often described as the largest military offensive by the British empire in Africa, saw 13,000 troops deployed to free the British hostages as well as capture and loot the emperor’s fortress.
The British were led by Robert Napier while the Abyssinians were led by Emperor Tewodros II.
As the British won the battle, Tewodros chose to take his life rather than give himself up to the British as prisoner of war.
Tewodros’s seven-year-old son, Prince Alemayehu, was also taken after the Battle of Maqdala and became a favourite of Queen Victoria.
The young prince, however, died of pleuritis at 18 and Queen Victoria requested he should be buried at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Woman Delivered Triplet After Her Two Children Were Kidnapped
The family of Mr Azeez has welcomed a set of triplets at their home on Aiyepe Avenue in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State, it will be recalled that in November 2016 the couple lost two children to suspected kidnappers which has been a tough time for the family.
Well-wishers and residents have been trooping to their home on Monday, to catch a glimpse of the triplet, two girls and a boy, who were born on Thursday, February 28, 2019.
Suliat, who had a hairdressing salon in the Okokomaiko area, took a new apprentice who was asked to bring a guarantor the next day.
The apprentice whose real name was Gladys Austin but falsely gave her name as Grace, deceived Suliat’s two children, Kafayat (six) and Farouk (four), and allegedly disappeared with them that same day.
Special Anti Robbery Squad later paraded a suspect in March 2017 for selling another child to a ring of syndicates in Abia, Anambra and Enugu states, Grace had been identified by Suliat and her neighbours during an identification parade by the police as the apprentice, who allegedly stole her children.
The suspect, however, denied abducting Suliat’s children, insisting that she did not know their whereabouts.
The family tried all means possible to locate their children but all effort proved futile
This baffled Suliat was said to have locked herself in the house and took a local insecticide, Sniper, she attempted sucide repeatedly because of depression.
She was however taken to her hometown in Oyo State for medical attention. But she still attempted another suicide in her hometown but was saved.
Suliat told a news outlet that she spent seven months in the village to recover from the shock of the missing kids before returning to Lagos.
Suliat said she burst into tears of joy when she was told that she had been delivered of the triplets.
She stated, “When the two children were kidnapped, we went to the SARS in Ikeja many times without any result. We also reported at the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan. We did everything we were asked to do. The police later asked us to return that they had found the suspect; we also identified her. They kept pushing us back and forth. They collected N50,000 from my husband. Later, they said the case file was missing. We spent a lot of money.
“I thought it was all over for me. I thought that I had no reason to live again since the children, who should be my future, were no more.
“That was why I took Sniper. But because God said it was not over for me and my time to die had not come, I did not die.
When I returned from the village in January, I was advised to go back to my shop to reduce my worry. But by the time I returned, the landlord started making trouble with me. He gave me quit notice and even beat me up.
“We were recovering from that when we got information that our landlord had sold the house we were staying and we had just renewed our rent. It appeared that we would be homeless until my husband got this small place we are now managing.
As you can see, everywhere is empty. We have sold all our property, including land, during this period. But God decided to surprise me.”
She also said she never knew she will deliver triplets until she got to the labour room.
She added, “After I was delivered of the first child, we expected the placenta to come out. But I was told that it was another baby. And while we expected another placenta, they told me that it was another baby again. When the nurses announced that I had had three children, tears of joy rolled down my cheeks. My husband also started crying.
“I still have the hope that God will complete my joy by returning my lost children. I solicit the prayers of Nigerians that wherever my children may be, they will be found.”
Suliat’s sister, Bilikisu Omokeji, who spoke amidst sobs, described God as ‘Alapadupe’ (the one who gives room for praise even in tragedy).
“When I got the news of her delivery around 6.30am, iI laughed and cried at the same time. How wonderful is this God! Over two years ago, people joined us in walking the streets as we cried around in search of our lost children. And now this year, he has turned our sorrow to joy. God took the two children and I know, Insha Allah, they will return home,” Bilikisu stated.
The children’s father, Fatai, said the family was in need of funds.
He appealed to Nigerians to support him and his wife.
“While I hope to be reunited with my missing children someday, I have accepted my fate. I believe nothing happens to any man without God’s knowledge. And He has vindicated me with these bundles of joy, which I never expected,” he said.

BREAKING: PDP Confirms Arrest of Atiku Campaign Deputy DG
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Director General (Admin) Presidential Campaign Organization, Tanimu Turaki SAN, has been reportedly arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for no apparent reason.
The Spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Turaki’s arrest and detention was part of the grand plot by the Buhari Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to use state apparatus of power to intimidate PDP leaders and scuttle the party’s determination to reclaim its February 23 presidential election victory in court.
Challenging the Buhari’s Government he demand the immediate and unconditional release of Turaki.
The statement said, “Since the people’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP expressed our unwavering determination to reclaim our victory at the tribunal, being armed with overwhelming evidence, our leaders have been subjected to escalated harassments, constant threats, blackmails, cajoling and contrivances by the APC to drop our legal option.
“It is instructive to state that Tanimu Turaki was arrested and detained upon invitation by the EFCC to endorse a bail document for the Finance Director of Atiku Abubakar’s company, Babalele Abdullahi, who was arrested earlier by the commission over flimsy allegations.
“The PDP, however, states in clear terms that the APC and the Buhari Presidency are fighting a lost battle as no amount of harassment and threats will ever make the party to buckle in its determination to take back the mandate, in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.
“Nigerians are resolute on this struggle to reclaim the mandate freely given to Atiku Abubakar at the polls and the PDP will pursue this decision to its logical end and secure justice for the Nigerian people”.

If you can’t, then at least bring about small changes around you to help the nation. You can keep your surroundings clean, not litter the roads, not urinate in the public, not harassing girls,” Ms Mandavgane told reporters. The message was widely shared online.
